  • EBB2024 – A Retrospective

More than 150 participants from various European countries, including groups from Poland (Gdańsk), Sweden (Västerås), and France (Mulhouse), as well as from the northern Hesse region, took part in the Third European Citizen Encounter (EBB) in Kassel from September 12th to 15th, 2024. They contributed to numerous workshops and activities.

The event kicked off with the opening ceremony at the Kassel Town Hall. On Thursday evening, the EBB was launched with fanfares from the CVJM Brass Band and a Ukrainian band. In his welcome speech to the guests from Europe, Dr. Sven Schoeller, Mayor and patron of the event, stated that Europe must once again become a project of the younger generations: “We must anchor Europe not only in our minds but also in our hearts.” The Citizen Encounter contributes to this goal. Not only were the guests welcomed, but greetings were also extended to the hosts. In a total of 7 languages, the citizens of Europe were prepared for the days ahead.

On Friday and Saturday, the actual encounter took place in the workshops. Participants discussed and exchanged ideas on a wide range of topics. In total, 15 workshops were held. The workshops allowed participants to engage with a broad spectrum of themes. One of the most popular workshops was “At the Common Table – Life in Multicultural Cities.” Drawing on their experiences, participants compared their living conditions in Gdańsk, Lviv, and Kassel, sharing positive examples as well as everyday problems. In the “Direct Democracy and Citizen Participation in Europe” workshop, participants looked at countries that already have long-standing experience with direct democratic processes. Contrary to the still-present German skepticism, citizen initiatives, referenda, and citizen petitions have proven to be compatible with representative parliamentary systems. The need for direct democratic additions at both the local and national levels is demonstrated by the many citizens’ councils, whose opinions are integrated into parliamentary decisions. The “Decision-Making and Dialogue in Planning Cells” workshop was particularly diverse, with participants from six nations discussing their experiences in voluntary work.

Friday evening concluded with two concerts. At the Schlachthof, the guests had the rare opportunity to hear Mariia Parkhomenko, an accomplished soloist on the Bandura, a traditional Ukrainian lute. Together with clarinetist Oleksandr Perlosvskyi, she offered a varied program of classical and contemporary pieces. Following that, the Kassel world music ensemble Nawa invited everyone on a musical world tour.

On Saturday, three more highlights of EBB2024 took place. At an event attended by around 120 guests in the hall of the Neue Denkerei, European Parliament Vice-President Katarina Barley called for engagement in the preservation of democracy. “Democracy is not static; it is a process that must be secured, fought for, and lived.” In Hungary, fundamental democratic rules have been abolished, but the example of Poland shows that democracy can also be regained. Criticism of current politics is not a justification to turn away from democracy. Europe must continue to stand for unity, solidarity, and compassion. After the discussion, a rally was held where participants demanded more European solidarity, especially in light of the conflicts on the European continent. In the evening, the now legendary Europe Party marked the conclusion of the EBB. The final evening dinner reflected on the intense days, and the event concluded with a lively dance.

The event was organized by the Europa Union Kassel, supported by the cooperation partners “Pulse of Europe,” the City of Kassel, and the EU information office “Europe Direct.” The event was supported by the “CERV” program of the European Commission, the Foundation for German-Polish Cooperation, the Kasseler Sparkasse, the Hessian State Chancellery, the Meckelburg Garden Center, as well as many other donors and members of the Europa-Union Kassel e.V.

If you need further information about the CERV Program, please find the event description sheet below.

The workshop we want to present to international community of The Pulse of Europe is an offer for all who are interested in experiencing and reflection on cultural diversity and its roots. The minilectures will interlace with group exercises such as: court simulation, group work on working sheets (reflection on location of evil in different cultures).
The activity of Transformatornia Foundation in area of multicultralism has been increasing since 2019 when The MultiEvil-Multi Ways project is being implemented for the first time.

The main issue we tackled in the project was establishing social consensus on the rules of individual and social morality at times when the more and more frequent coexistence of various worldviews in the space of the cities take place.
The openness of the pluralism of the project is evident in the fact that we gave. our voice to individual communities without judging one overriding perspective.

The effects of the project are presentations which were prepared by our experts from different cultures which shows how perception of evil functions in different cultures/religions. Each participant of the workshop will receive them as a tool for preparation. Each participant will also receive the worksheet for the group work.

We hope to to get to know each other better. People of Europe – Diverse Europe.

    See You in April

    Thursday 18.02.2021from 6 – 7.30 pm

The aim of the Vision10! initiative, our partner for this workshop, is to establish long-term links

The European Green Deal sets out how to make Europe the first climate-neutral continent by 2050. It maps a new, sustainable and inclusive growth strategy to boost the economy, improve
people’s health and quality of life, care for nature, and leave no one behind. The Farm to Fork Strategy is at the heart of the Green Deal. It addresses comprehensively the challenges of sustainable food systems and recognises the inextricable links between healthy people, healthy societies and a healthy planet.

In our panel with long-standing member of European Parliament Martin Häusling, who is spokesperson for agriculture (Greens/EFA) we will discuss if this is a promising approach and if the common agricultural policy (GAP) which takes up a fair amount of European
taxpayers’ money lives up to the expectations of Green Deal.

  • Livestream on the 16th June 2020, 7pm: Between solidarity and forced debt

Corona is challenging the European Union!

Link to the Livestream in German: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCIYXp5xhUlSWcbQ0hhG5h8g

We offer a simultaneous translation into English and Polish. If you need a translation, please contact office@kassel-ebb.eu.

Governments and the Commission in the European Union are struggling for the right measures to mitigate the economic and social consequences of the Corona pandemic and to make the European Union environmentally and technologically sustainable through sustainable investment programmes. Whatever concrete measures are decided at the end, the necessary financial volume is gigantic. Consequently, the question of funding must also be answered – and this cannot be done in an empty space.
Different levels of indebtedness, varying degrees of distress due to the crisis, different economic and social structures and different conceptions of what in this situation means “correctly” are the stones from which a mosaic capable of approving everyone must be designed, the solution for Europe.

  • Online discussion about Europe and Corona

We are facing many challenges at the moment. Even though we can not meet in person, we still want to discus the latest developments around the Coronavirus and its impact on Europe. Every european citizen is invited to take part. If you want to take part, please send us an e-mail to office@kassel-ebb.eu. We’ll send you the login information for the online discussion.

Time and date will be announced soon.

  • Citizens’ Meeting Postponed until 2021

The Coronavirus crisis is affecting all of us in Europe and globally.
We hope you’re fine. Stay healthy!

Due to the crisis, we have decided to postpone the 2nd European Citizen’s Meeting, which was planned for September 17 through 20, 2020, to next year. Exact dates are to be announced. The 3rd major organizational meeting planned for April 21 will also be held at a later date.

We will, of course, continue to update our homepage and you are more than welcome to keep yourself up-to-date.

Feel free to contact us in case you have any questions.

We also strive to hold on to the projects and workshops planned so far, and
    to acquire new ones.

We’re looking forward with confidence, as moving the Citizens’ Meeting to 2021 gives us the opportunity to further develop and prepare the event.

Especially now, during the Coronavirus crisis, it becomes clear that Europe must come closer together and show solidarity. We want to contribute towards that!
